V6 (VR6) 3.2 steuerkette - BDL (T5)

Beitrag von bullivr6 »

Hello and happy Easter!
Forgive my english. I know that the V6 engine has issues with the timing chain, that breaks down without any sign of subsidence (noises) and ruins the whole engine. This is common for the golf r32 and the audi s3, I think for the T5 as well because the engine is the same. Now I have the results of my engine's compression test:
Cyl1: 10,8
Cyl2: 10,5
Cyl3: 10,1
Cyl4: 10,6
Cyl5: 10,8
Cyl6: 10,8

The elsa says that the right compression for a NEW engine is between 10 and 13 (but I don't buy it. I bet the brand new engine goes up to 15), that the minimal compression to keep as limit to consider an engine broken is 7,5 into a cylinder; and that the max difference between the most compressed cylinder and the less compressed one is 3.
I keep as refence the less compressed cylinder, the #3 that is 10,1.
If I consider that the valuable compression stands between 7,5 and 13, I have the 46% of the total compression; if I consider it between 7,5 and 10 I have more than the 100% (!!!) of the total compression.
Also, the difference between the less compressed engine that is #3 and the most compressed #1;5;6 is only 0,7.

In your opinion, does this engine deserve to be SAVED? Do you think that changing the timing chain is the right decision or it's better to keep it as it is because the compression is too low and shows too many signs of worn?
I don't know because changing the timing chain is very expensive, the engine must unmounted and it costs about 3000 euro.

Is there someone who has already experience timing chain issues with the BDL engine?

Thank you in advance.

Happy easter :)

the timing chain does not break just like that, there are signs, but you have to listen for it ;)

your compression values are ok, to get a more detailed view you can make a pressure-loss test (http://www.vr6forum.eu/phpBB3/viewtopic ... 63&t=19991)

To check your chain, you read out with diagnosis the block 208 und 209, up to -8° is ok by VW. if its above (-9° and more) then chain is stretched and should be replaced.

Switch the oil intervall from longlife to normal, thats one of the best things you can do for it

Thank you so much!
The compression test was executed into my local vw shop. I didn't know it was possible to check the timing using the electronics; also, I don't have the ross tech VAG com; so that if it is possible the operation to check the timing with the official VAG appareils, I can ask them to do that. But how is that about? What should I ask for?
About myself, I really don't know what reading out with diagnosis the block 208 und 209 means... :buch:
I can swear that my BDL is the first engine they see... the vr6 is a very rare engine here into the golf, into the T5 is just non existent; so I need to be as precise as I can.
Thank you again.

Here the results (rough translation):

Block 209 Read: 680/min 122 4.0°KW
Block 208 Read: 680/min 123 2.0°KW 680/min 123 2.0°KW
Block 209 Read: 680/min 122 4.0°KW

No defect found

Sure! Will do: each time I get the oil changed, I ask to check those values.

Why should I change from the long life oil to the normal one? Is not that long life better?
Also my long life should be a vw 503.00 (and not the usual 504.00 I use for my car: weird!) while the short life oil is the old 502.00. Which kind of oil is better for my van?

The Mobil1 0W40 is not there anymore, so which one should I buy? I know that the HTHS is an important value. How much should it is? >3,5? I don't know what is the 503.00's hths value...
I can't either find out an oil that respects the 503.00...

So, what about the castrol magnatec?
Thank you in advance again.

Changing every year. This is important.

The Oil isnt the Problem...

Use the longlife oil, but the short intervall, and replace the filter always.

The important thing is to get the dirty oil out, as all the VR's are sensitive to that.

What oil exactly does not matter, just make shure it has the VW approval.
